Week 5 Journal Entry

This week we learned about preparing leaders for the future. In Discussion 1, we talked about the different levels of leadership within an organization and how training needs are different and progress with each level. It was interesting to see how the concepts from previous weeks were woven into this topic. Many students mentioned the importance of understanding what the root cause of training needs are and how this plays into creating programs for leadership development.

Discussion 2 had us review a case study where training funds were cut. We had to analyze the information provided in the reading to determine a method for presenting a business case for adding executive training into the corporate budget. Topics such as intangible and tangible assets, qualitative and quantitative data, as well as metrics and analytics were discussed. It was mentioned how difficult it is for HR leaders to present the information to back the need for training as often the numbers cannot be derived until training has been implemented. It was a great discussion that posed additional questions and dialogue between classmates.

Our final assignment is to be submitted this week. We had to create an e-learning module for new students accessing the Canvas platform. I used a variety of tools to create my presentation including: Camtasia, Doodly, and iSpring. I have created learning material in my previous job as a training specialist, so I was aware of how long it actually takes to create a tutorial. I started this project in week 1 of this course and completed the material in week 5. Well more than 10 hours was dedicated to adding content, recordings, and narration to the project.

Our Personal Learning Network (PLN) was also due this week. I really enjoyed this assignment as I was able to obtain a lot of excellent resources that I can use in my career. I found videos, blogs, newsletters, groups, and associations in all different areas of the HR field. I utilized OneNote to add my content and will continue to use this as a resource going forward. It proved to be helpful having all of this information in one spot that is easily accessible.

Our final assessment was also due this week. In week 1, we submitted a document that expressed what we already know and what we want to learn throughout this course. I was very happy with the content, delivery, and instruction I received. I feel I was able to obtain some new information and was successful in learning the items I set out to at the beginning of class.

I look forward to using all of this new knowledge in my workplace!

Week #1 Journal Entry

Week 1: Talent Management: The Big Picture This week we learned about how competencies, career pathing, and HR technology support talent management. Our first discussion asked us to identify how talent management drives the business forward. Reviewing all posts from classmates, the following items were identified as being imperative in the talent management process: Coaching and feedback Scorecards All employees working toward the same goals Competencies consistent with company culture Hiring for fit Succession planning/Leadership development Handcock and Harris (2014) discuss how Learning & Development (L & D) in a knowledge economy results in high-performing talent that can give a business competitive advantage. People are often viewed as an organization's greatest asset, therefore it is logical to invest as much time and resources in their development as possible. However, managers are often unprepared and lack direction when it comes to coaching and de...

Week 3 Journal Entry

This week's concept proved to be challenging for most of the class. Systems thinking was introduced and we were asked to conduct an experiment for our first discussion. A ruler was placed on top of a dog biscuit to create a replica of a seesaw. Then, two volunteers were asked to try to place coins on the ruler without letting it touch the table. This was done for a total of five tries. Then, a barrier was placed in between the two volunteers and they were asked to complete the same process again. The results were compared and analyzed to determine what barriers existed and how the experiment is relative to the workplace. Communication was discussed as well as gaps, barriers, and objectives. In the workplace, talent management and development must be part of the culture in order to succeed. As we learned in the previous weeks, the more a business invests in its people, the more productivity increases and the more engaged the workforce becomes. As much as it has been proven that ta...
